House Manager

Manages all front of house aspects for any performance

  • Safety of the audience and all members who are front of house
  • Ensure sufficient staffing of members/helpers for ushers
  • Attend Committee Meetings and participate in meeting discussions

Pre-show
Arrange to receive TicketSource Front of House Report by email or in print
Pre-show
Arrange 3 volunteers to remain in the Hall during the show - one at each fire exit. These members can also be ushers for the audience.

Ensure there is at least one trained First Aider at each performance

Locate the Front of House box, which contains three torches, and check torches are working
Pre-show
Locate the First Aid boxes - one in the kitchen and one on stage - and ensure they are fully stocked
During tiering set up
Ensure the spaces under the tiering at the rear are kept clear for:
- Sound equipment
- Bar stock
- Stage steps (nearest the front door)
- Benches and folding tables
Anything else needs to be pushed forward as far as possible under the tiering

Seating: once the seats are set out, check the chairs do not touch the metal rails - or they will fall off

Seating: attach the numbers and letters to each row (check with the Box Office Manager or the seating plan on the website)

Ensure ushers understand the layout of the seating to enable them to show audience members to their seats

Check with Box Office Manager if there are any audience members requiring disabled/wheelchair access and, if so, ensure you or an usher mans the back door to guide them

In case of seating disputes or misunderstandings, check the Front of House Report which details audience names and tickets

At 7:30:
- Check with the Box Office Manager whether everyone has arrived and take any tickets for those still to arrive
- Notify the Lighting Technician that the show can start
- Close the curtains over both entrances/exits

During the show:
- Make sure the ushers stand at the fire exits
- Do not allow anyone else to stand at the fire exits
- Show any late-comers to their seats
- Bring in the “cast only” car park sign
- Put the raffle ticket numbers on the prizes when available
- Keep a watchful eye on the audience for mobile phones and for any potential problems

At the interval:
- Open the curtains over both entrances/exits
- Liaise with the bar, refreshments and the Lighting Technician to know when the interval is finishing
- Make sure the bar is emptied and the audience are ushered back to their seats
- Find a suitable time to read out the raffle winners - usually five minutes before the interval ends
- Close the curtains over both entrances/exits
Performance Nights
At the end of the show:
- Open the curtains over both entrances/exits
- Turn on all the light switches at the back of the Hall
- Give out the raffle prizes
- Check everyone leaves safely
- Clean up
