This was an enjoyable production from director Nora Howcroft containing pacy chorus numbers, excellent colour co-ordinated costumes all supported by a good rich sound from the orchestra under the baton of Ben Smith. Dance numbers were attractively choreographed by Laura Crombie.
The production was marked by several excellent performances, particularly Kate Gregory as Babe Williams, Allison Smith as Gladys and an energetic portrayal of Hines by Andrew Turton. Mike Fallon did well as the devious, overbearing, baseball bat swinging Hasler whilst Tim Shorten looked comfortable in the role of the laid-back Sid as he dealt with Hasler and the grievance committee. Smaller principal roles were competently played by David Witt (Prez), Kathy Turton (Mabel) and Mike Taylor (Pop).
One of the major problems with this show is the number of scene changes which often slow down a production. This was overcome by the talented backstage team led by Stage Manager John West with excellent sets and swift scene changes.
My congratulations to all concerned for a most enjoyable evening’s entertainment.
